Violin Posting No. 4: Bowing

Images used for non-commercial, educational purposes only.

The two images show the position of the arm and wrist when the bow is near the frog, and near(er) the tip of the bow, respectively.* Remember to lift the arm in the second half of the up-bow, and sigh, I know that’s a personal reminder too. I’m also suspicious of my thumb in the upper pic and my index finger in the lower one, but that’s not really the focus here.

Important note: the little finger in the lower picture may be straightened, depending on the size of your fingers – just remember not to “lock” it in a straight tight position (unless you’re Nigel Kennedy). The lower pic shows the position of the arm if the bow is kept rather straight, that is, parallel to the bridge and perpendicular to the strings. Some pedagogues and players (William Primrose is an example) prefer playing “around the corner”, allowing the bow to move into a little backward arc, keeping the wrist and arm in a straighter line at the tip. I personally use this as I find it good for the viola, but after consultation with a colleague, have decided to post the image you see as a more standardly taught bow position.

All being said, in the end, sound is the final judge.

*Though some might use the first finger differently - touching the bow towards the middle of the finger.

All are welcome to comment in any language they feel most comfortable, and to use these postings as a forum. Previous postings are in a category in the side bar, with the ones marked with an asterisk (*) being other, indirectly related musical posts, which may remain in English only.
