Where are the kites?

I’m getting into one of these phases again, which is why my visit back to Penang next month is something to look forward to; it’s usually a stop-gap at least, in its healthy distractions. I suppose my current distractions are healthy as well, but the problem is the question mark at the end of it. The problem of course, is that there aren’t enough kites.

Symbolically anyway. I’m referring to Ben Franklin, the guy daring enough to sign against the British and smart enough to land up smiling on US currency but still crazy enough to fly a kite in a storm to "discover" electricity. (Imagine if he got electrocuted – all that fake hair on that wig would look quite different on the $100 bill.) But hey ho, no matter which way the volts went, that was as original as original comes, and man, there aren’t enough kites flying today! Everyone’s worried about getting a degree (instead of gaining knowledge) then, finding a job which earns you a living, where some of routine is actually necessary for things to sustain themselves today. Even our free time is organized into some sort of routine.

“…to be worthy of remembrance!” The origins elude me, but I’m fairly certain it’s either an angry Klingon in Star Trek, or a Shakespearian play-made-movie with an actor who spat so much in the soliloquies that I thought heck, he’s gonna slip on that stage and we’ll have a new definition of poetic justice. Original is immortal, so time to get shots at living forever and thus get moving on what lofty ideas I’ve been keeping on some back burner:

1. The book’s already started, so get some real progress – before I’m officially closer to 30 than 20.

2. Write up Red Curry for Viola and Harp With Handphone Obbligato for Amanda and me to play – single movement piece, from “Andante religioso – only slightly drunk” to “Andante maestoso ala Happy Hour” – looks like I’ve got a couple of months.
3. Time to start something with that idea of a play with Sneexe. Short skit at any rate – sometime this year.
4. Put some befuddling music online with Mike and Jinx – next month.
5. Paint. (This one’s just for me. Good gosh it’s different… just like me cooking.)
6. Consider Constz’s suggestion of recording violin jazz.

If you would not be forgotten, as soon as you are dead & rotten, either write things worth reading, or do things worth the writing. – Benjamin Franklin.

not enough wind for kite-flying in a lot of places, particularly where we spend most of our time, imo. sad

You know the song?

... with a bit of paper and string
you can have your own set of wings
with your feet on the ground you're a bird in flight...
with your fist holding tight
to the string of your kite...

"Let's Go Fly a Kite" from Mary Poppins. What I'd like to place (and perhaps buy a CD of, is the other song with Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke singing in the park; those were the days of real Disney hits).

Ooooh it's a jolly holiday with Maary...
Mary makes yer 'eart so light
When the day is gray and ordinary
Mary makes the sun shine bright

O 'appiness is bloomin all around 'er
Daffodils are smilin at the sun
When Mary 'olds yer 'and, you feel so grand,
Yer 'eart starts beatin' like a big brass band...

I realise I have a near perfect recall of almost all the old song lyrics. And considering I haven't heard / seen these in a while!!!

I realise I have a hidden talent for memorising things people say / lines. I should have been an actor. SIGH.
